I recently took a week off social media and it was refreshing. So easy to both waste time down the rabbit hole and spend it admiring other people’s work (and comparing) instead of making your own. It’s a delicate dance, maintaining the balance between inspiration and perspiration.
I crave a lot of input so I easily get into cycles of research mode, collection mode, feeding on information and inspiration and then diving into creative work that synthesizes it all. A lovely process when taken all together in balance.
Maintaining a conscious awareness of the appropriate use of time is a constant act of refinement.

A current book illustration project has me doing character design exploration for 30 mental states. I know a lot of folks have been experiencing this one. This is the bottom, let’s work our way up from here. You are not alone.
I read recently some writing from Pema Chödrön that takes a very non western, non theistic point of view that hopelessness is actually the beginning of freedom.
When you let go of the hope that things could have been different than they are, you step into accepting the reality of what is and laying down the great burden of hope that leads to suffering. That is a clear starting point from which to accept what is and from there we can begin to take clear action toward what should be. I know abandoning hope sounds nihilistic and antithetical to traditional, western self help thinking.
But in this context hope is viewed as the other side of the same coin as fear. Coming from a sense of poverty. Something I’m meditating on this week. #art #artist #artistsoninstagram #arte #instaart #illustration #artoftheday #illustratorsoninstagram #illustrationartists
